Affirmative Action

The Brunswick School Department does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, color, ancestry or national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, genetic information, or physical or mental disability in admission to, access to, treatment in or employment in its programs and activities.

The School Board has adopted an affirmative action policy, a non-discrimination policy, and an affirmative action plan.

Assistant Superintendent Shawn Lambert is the Brunswick School Department Affirmative Action Officer.

TITLE IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 is a federal law that states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Assistant Superintendent Shawn Lambert is the Brunswick School Department Title IX Coordinator.

In general terms, public school responsibilities regarding Title IX encompass two broad categories:  gender/sex discrimination and gender/sex harassment.

Gender/Sex Discrimination

Title IX mandates that school districts provide boys and girls with equal curricular and co-curricular opportunities.  Federal regulations and Office of Civil Rights policy require public schools to sufficiently “accommodate the interests and abilities” of female students (including athletes) relative to males.  Brunswick School Department is committed to providing equitable access to programming for both males and females.  For more information on how Brunswick maintains equitable access, contact Shawn Lambert.

Gender/Sex Harassment

Title IX regulations prohibits harassment on the basis of sex which takes place within the context of the school unit’s education programs and activities.  Brunswick School Department has adopted policies on the harassment and sexual harassment of students and the harassment and sexual harassment of employees. These policies are supported by these student investigation procedures and staff investigation procedures.

Title IX training materials can be found here.

Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prevents discrimination against individuals with disabilities in services, programs, and activities administered by entitis that receive federal funds.  It states, “No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States shall, solely by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

Student Services Director Ruth Joyce is the Brunswick School Department 504 Coordinator.
