Counseling and Social Work Services

School Counselors
The Brunswick School Department employs Maine Department of Education-certified school counselors for all schools. There is currently one counselor for each elementary school, two counselors at the junior high, and four counselors at the high school. At every level, school counselors are an integral part of the school environment, working with children, staff and parents to meet the needs of each student.

School counselors seek opportunities to foster student success, while advocating for access and equity for all students. School counselors help students apply academic achievement strategies, manage emotions, apply interpersonal skills, and plan for postsecondary options.

Counselors perform a variety of tasks, including providing counseling for students individually and in small groups, serving as a resource for parents and staff, implementing the guidance curricula and actively participating in Section 504 and Individualized Education Planning meetings for children with special needs. School Social Workers
Social workers can provide individual and group therapeutic services — including, but not limited to stress management techniques, emotional regulation skills, and social and problem-solving skills. Social workers connect students and families to community resources in order to reduce/eliminate environmental barriers such as homelessness, substance abuse or food insecurity. They also can assess emotional and social functioning, mental health symptoms including trauma, peer issues, suicidal and homicidal ideations and other environmental factors in order to determine how they present barriers to educational success; they also assist and support students in overcoming such barriers. Additionally, crisis assessment and management, including safety planning, can be provided. In short, social workers collaborate with community providers and parents in supporting the social/emotional and academic growth of students.
