Return-to-School Update from Superintendent Potenziano

Dear Brunswick Staff, Students, and Parents:

It is wonderful to have students back in the classroom at all BSD schools. Students were thrilled to be back in the classroom with some friends they have only interacted with on the computer screen during virtual lessons this year.  I personally heard from several teachers who said they were brought to tears when first beginning to teach their classes. The dedication, planning, and countless hours that our amazing staff has put into reopening school is inspiring to see in action these past two days.

As we adjust to new practices and protocols, the health and safety of our students and staff continues to be our top priority.

Mask Wearing at School

This week the Maine Department of Education revised its PK-12 and Adult Education Public Health Guidance.  This document has guided all Brunswick School Department’s instructional programming this school year.  The latest revision includes changes in mask requirements in outdoor settings.   The district’s physician and nursing staff have reviewed these changes.  The most significant change is that students and adults will not have to wear face coverings outside if they can maintain six feet of social distance from others.   To adhere to this revision, the following requirements will take effect on May 3:

  • Masks are still required for all indoor classes and activities (including buses).

  • Masks are still required during outdoor recess because 6-foot distancing cannot be maintained, particularly with younger students.

  • Masks are still required during outdoor classes and activities if students cannot be 6 feet apart.  (Note that classes are now based on 3-foot distancing, so it is unlikely that 6-foot distancing will be possible.)

  • Masks are not required during outdoor activities when 6-foot distancing can be maintained.

Mask Wearing in MPA Athletics

This week the Maine Principals Association also revised its mask requirements for athletes and spectators at athletic events.   The district’s physician and nursing staff have also reviewed these changes.  As a result, the following requirements are now in effect for voluntary athletics:

  • Athletes must wear masks when inside (locker rooms, restrooms, buses, etc.).

  • Athletes do not have to wear masks during outdoor practices and competitions.  Masks are recommended when 6 feet of physical distance is hard to maintain (e.g., athletes on the bench).

  • Spectators do not have to wear masks at outdoor events when 6-foot distancing can be maintained.

Thank you for your continued support and patience as we change our policies in accordance with state and local guidance.

Sincerely,

Phillip J. Potenziano Ed.D.
