Hello Brunswick Families:

The first day for many students is in the books, and overall it was a great success!  We learned a few things and are refining some practices and procedures to be more effective and efficient.  The most recent procedures can be found on the FAQs page of the BSD website

One change we are making involves music instruction.  Teaching music is one of those things that is difficult to do while masking.  We had originally decided to not use musician masks (with slits) when playing wind instruments.  Upon reflection, however, given that no elementary and only some BJHS students are eligible to be vaccinated, it seemed prudent to require grades 3-8 wind musicians to wear musician masks when playing their instruments.   We will provide these masks.

The most up-to-date procedures for music instruction in the schools are:

Kate Furbish Elementary School

  • All music is vocal at KFS.

  • Students will wear masks at all times including when singing.

Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School

  • Music is both vocal and instrumental at HBS.

  • Students will wear masks at all times, including when singing and playing instruments.

  • Students playing wind instruments will use musician masks (with slits).

  • All reed and brass instruments will have bell covers to slow the spread of aerosols.

Brunswick Junior High School

  • Music is both vocal and instrumental at BJHS.

  • Students will wear masks at all times, including when singing and playing instruments.

  • Students playing wind instruments will use musician masks (with slits).

  • All reed and brass instruments will have bell covers to slow the spread of aerosols.

Brunswick High School

  • Music is both vocal and instrumental at BHS.

  • Students will wear masks at all times including when singing and playing non-wind instruments.

  • Students playing wind instruments may remove their masks only while playing.

  • All reed and brass instruments will have bell covers to slow the spread of aerosols.

Thanks for your patience and your support.

Sincerely,

Shawn Lambert
