March 1, 2022

Dear Brunswick Staff, Students, and Parents:

I hope you all had an enjoyable February vacation. Spring may seem elusive, but I assure you it is coming!

I am pleased to announce that early indications are that COVID-19 infections during February vacation appear to have been low. Specific numbers on current infections can be found on the district’s COVID-19 dashboard. We will continue to monitor these infections and related metrics. We are particularly interested in the rates during the ten days after the February vacation since infections during school vacation will show up then.

Today, I met with the BSD Health Services Team. In anticipation of continued low infection rates and predicted changes by the Maine CDC to the Maine Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Brunswick School Department is planning to make masks optional starting on March 14, 2022. However, all other health and safety practices will continue, including pooled testing, facility sanitizing, hand washing, use of outdoor spaces, and symptomatic BinaxNOW testing.

Please know that this is a tentative plan, and as such, we will continue to closely monitor infection rates and other relevant metrics. I will communicate a final decision on whether masking will become optional at the March 9, 2022 school board meeting.

Sincerely,

Phillip J. Potenziano, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
